The 'CalNeva Chronicles P.2' is about a place in which one looses all sense of reality. A spiral of chaos, dysphoria and smoke. A casino in downtown Reno. Compositionally, I explored many techniques. The piece begins with a challenging but fun melody played by all instruments in unison. I have been delving into Middle Eastern, Indian and Klezmer music these last few years, and set out to write a melody that would incorporate some of these unique modes and inspirations. After the melody is stated twice, the piece moves into a new and contrasting episode as a twelve-tone row is expressed in a rubato manner. I am fascinated by atonal music and it’s seemingly limitless opportunities for composition. The tone row is used as a vehicle for improvisation as the music opens into a ‘free’ episode. I chose these specific musicians for this piece, as they are some of my favorite musicians to improvise with.
